We are excited to introduce new faculty member Laura Norton! We know you’ll love Laura’s warmth and openness, her passion for calligraphy, and her gentle humor.
This new class promises a true feast for the senses! It brings together the vibrant colors of silk painting, the beautiful flow of calligraphic marks and lettering, the expressive power of the chosen text, and the richness of the silk fabric itself.
Experienced calligrapher Laura Norton will guide participants in the creation of richly ornamented silk scarves, banners, stoles, and other items. We will explore issues relating to design and layout, the choice of colors, techniques for creating beautiful flowing calligraphic marks and lettering on silk, and methods for setting the paints in the fabric.
All experience levels welcome, including complete beginners. Ages 16+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
The week will begin with introductions to the silk painter’s tools and the specific techniques used for making calligraphic marks and lettering on silk. Instruction time will provide demonstrations and technical information about silk painting and calligraphy, as well as brief explorations of color theory and design principles.
Much of our class will be open work time with one-on-one feedback from the instructor as needed. Due to the complexity of the silk painting process, participants should expect to spend a significant amount of time in the studio outside of the scheduled class hours.
Each participant will have the opportunity to create several scarves over the course of the week. Experienced silk painters wishing to explore larger projects should contact the office for information about alternate materials.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary silk painting materials will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring a selection of short passages (scripture, poetry, quotations, etc.) that they may wish to letter on their pieces.
