Past students describe Glenn Doering as “a master jeweler AND a master teacher” and particularly enjoyed his encouraging attitude & infectious humor in the studio.
Learn the basic techniques of designing and creating fashion jewelry. We will work with beads made of glass, natural materials (e.g. turquoise, pearls, hematite), crystal, cloisonné, charms and more, combined with silver- and gold-dipped accents and findings. Become comfortable using jewelry-making tools as well as working with head pins, eye pins, jump rings, findings, stringing wire, crimp beads, etc.
We will explore the practical and aesthetic implications of different design choices, and will create pieces specifically tailored to the body type, lifestyle, and personal aesthetic of the wearer.
By the end of the week, you will have learned to make multiple styles of necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Each class day will feature brief demonstrations of jewelry-making techniques, insights into the design process, and ideas around problem-solving. Most of class time will be dedicated to open work time, with one-on-one feedback from the instructor as needed. While participants are not required to work outside of class time, the studio is open throughout the afternoon and evening for those wishing to continue working.
What can I expect to create?
Each participant will create a number of original, custom-designed jewelry pieces, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and more.
What should I bring to class?
A wide variety of jewelry-making tools and materials will be provided; however, participants are welcome to bring old jewelry to be reimagined, as well as any special beads or findings they may have. The instructor is also skilled in creating jewelry from found objects, so participants are welcome to bring unusual items (shells, trinkets, etc.) they wish to turn into jewelry.
