Join Gray Lyons and explore creative image-making using an historical, non-toxic photographic process invented in the 1840’s. Learn to mix photographic chemicals and make your own light-sensitive paper. Make photographs using elements of nature combined with your own imagination.
Participants will use objects to make photographic impressions and may choose to incorporate drawing and painting. Optional exercises include photographic toning and creating cliché verre negatives on acetate.
No experience and no camera necessary. Ages 14+ (Students aged 8-13 are welcome when accompanied by an adult student.) Space is limited to six participants.
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Morning sessions will involve a brief demonstration, followed by practice and exploration time. Afternoon sessions are open time for working, but may also involve optional activities. Attendance at any afternoon sessions is not required.
What can I expect to create?
Each student can expect to create a wide variety of images. These may involve photographic object impressions on paper, as well as images that incorporate drawing and painting, each according to their own interest. Cyanotype is an open, fluid process that lends itself easily to mixed-media exploration.
What should I bring to class?
While all necessary materials will be provided, participants are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty, and to bring a variety of small objects for making impressions (lace, feathers, thread, etc.)
