We are thrilled to welcome back faculty member Lanecia Rouse Tinsley! We have fallen in love with Lanecia’s warmth, authenticity, and thoughtful ways of articulating the connections between creativity, faith, and lived experience. One student described Lanecia as “a spiritual presence + a gifted teacher.” Another wrote, “Lanecia was fabulous; loved her process – please have her back.”
Join Lanecia in this abstract acrylic + mixed media intuitive painting workshop! In this class, we will explore various ways of using acrylic paints, paper + unconventional tools to create works that are emotive, expressive + bear some of the distinct characteristics of Abstract Expressionist paintings. Each studio session will begin with a time of written introspection, followed by a demonstration of an abstract painting technique + a painting exercises to open up your intuitive flow on small canvases, mixed media panels + paper.
The exercises are shaped to help the participant discover new ways of using paint + paper to tell a story, and to expand the participant’s visual vocabulary. The exercises will utilize jazz music, poetry, time limitations + other processes to help you tap into the deep well of creativity within you in new ways. Following the daily exercises each participant will work on a large scale abstract painting that they will have the week to create.
You will learn how to make your own abstract expressive artworks using texture, color, mark making + shapes to tell a story upon the canvas.
This is a brave space for all skill levels. Ages 16+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Each class will follow this rhythm of creative introspection:
I. Morning Pages (15 minutes)
II. Technique Demonstration + practice (20 -30 minutes)
III. 1 to 3 daily exercises, 45minutes-1hr
IV. Remainder of the class painting your large canvas painting
There is no requirement for participants to work outside of class time; however, some participants may wish to continue working in the afternoons or evenings.
Participants will complete several small scale paintings/experimental pieces (anywhere between 3 and 5 each day) and 1 large-scale painting.
Lanecia will shape the experience to be one in which you can begin and finish a work within the given length of time.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary materials will be provided; however, you may wish to bring magazines and papers for collaging and creating textures, as well as any tools or cleaning supply tools (rulers, jar tops, toilet bowl cleaner, bottle cleaner, utensils + rulers) you don’t mind getting paint on).
