Come study with returning faculty Sara Nordling and be ready to explore!
Weavers often want to push beyond the limits of the loom. Flat cloth? It’s okay for some things, but what if you could have bumps and dimension in the cloth you weave? In this class we will explore combining materials that shrink when washed (wool) with those that don’t (cotton, tencel, silk, etc) to create dimensional cloth. Drafts for 4 and 8 shafts will be available. 8 shaft patterns will include deflected double weave, a form of layered cloth that works very well with differential shrinkage. Knowledge of weaving and adapting drafts preferred for class participants.
The first day we will look at various dimensional cloths and choose one to try. We will choose materials (one that shrinks and one that doesn’t), wind warps and begin dressing the looms. The rest of the days will be spent weaving. At the end of the week we will take the cloth off the looms and wash them, shrinking the wool yarns. Some weaving drafts will have various treadling options that can be chosen from or used in turn.
What can I expect to create?
Students will produce a scarf or a small amount of yardage to use to make something else. This fabric will be dimensional, bumpy, suitable for scarves, shawls, pillows, hat or wall hangings. It is possible to create fabric for something like a table runner, but it isn’t the best fit for this type of fabric.
What should I bring to class?
An idea of what you want to make. If you have a special yarn you want to use, you may bring that and we may find a way to incorporate it.
