Poetry is often said to be the words of the soul. Poems help us understand and articulate ways we are moved, troubled, and inspired. Oftentimes, the source for our inspiration comes from our own stories. But what happens when we encounter other art forms that inspire us to no end? Whether it’s the song that moves our spirits, or the painting that stops us in our tracks, what happens when it is art that inspires our poetry? In this class taught by Guild Faculty Tamisha Tyler, we will interact with art in various mediums (painting, music, dance, etc). Through conversations about similar forms, color, rhythm, etc., we will write poetry inspired by each art form daily.
All experience levels welcome. Ages 16+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Each day will guide us through instructor presentations, reflective writing prompts, and group discussion as we explore different facets of our inspiration and connection to art. In addition to solitary work, participants will engage in group writing projects including collaborative poetry.
There is no requirement for participants to work outside of class time; however, writing can be time-consuming and some participants may wish to continue working in the afternoons or evenings.
Each participant is expected to work on one poem a day, that is inspired by the art form chosen for that class session. Participants are not expected to complete all five poems.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary materials will be provided. Participants may wish to bring a favorite journal if they have one, or a laptop if they prefer to compose in digital form. Participants are also welcome to bring cultural and personal artifacts (family photos for example)
