Longtime Guild faculty member Mike Bennett brings warmth, expertise, and playfulness to the studio with this beginner-friendly ceramics class.
Explore basic pottery techniques in an intimate class setting (maximum of 6 students).
This class will cover the creation of functional ceramic items, such as plates, bowls and mugs. We will be learning to use the potter’s wheel as our primary means of creation, as well as other techniques for adding handles, knobs, and ornamentation to our wheel-thrown forms. Participants will explore a range of glazing skills and techniques to complete our finished pottery. We will be working with both red and white stoneware clays fired to cone six in an electric kiln.
All experience levels welcome. This class is particularly oriented towards beginners. Ages 16+
Each day will start with demonstration and a brief lecture, followed by guided instruction for the remainder of the class. Access to the studio will be available throughout the day, so participants should plan on setting aside at least one hour outside of class each day for trimming and other piece-finishing tasks.
Participants wishing to create complex or ambitious projects should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.
Each participant will complete 5 – 10 finished items by the end of the week, including mugs, bowls, candle holders, vases, etc.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary pottery materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear old clothes and bring a work apron if desired.
