We are excited to introduce new faculty member Laura Norton! We know you’ll love Laura’s warmth and openness, her passion for calligraphy, and her gentle humor.
Italic lettering is one of the most popular forms of calligraphy today. If you’ve always wanted to try this beautiful and expressive art form, or would like to polish your italic letterforms, this class is for you!
Experienced calligrapher Laura Norton will guide participants in the use of calligraphy pens and practice papers, the art of forming italic letters, and some of the philosophy behind the art of calligraphy. Once we’re familiar with our tools and have some experience with forming letters, participants will have the opportunity to select short scriptures, poems, or other passages to express in calligraphy.
This class is designed as an introduction to calligraphy for complete beginners, or as an opportunity for more experienced calligraphers to brush up on their skills and begin to develop a personal style. Ages 13+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
The week will begin with introductions to the calligrapher’s tools and techniques. Instruction time will blend demonstrations with hands-on opportunities for participants to practice their lettering.
The rest of the class will be open practice and work time with one-on-one feedback from the instructor as needed. It is not necessary to work outside of class, but the studio is open 24 hours a day and participants are welcome to continue working as much as they choose.
Each participant will create a small portfolio of practice calligraphy, and at least one finished calligraphic rendering of a short scripture, poem, or other passage of the student’s choice.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary calligraphy materials will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring a selection of short passages (scripture, poetry, quotations, etc.) that they may wish to express in calligraphy.
