Past participants praise Laura Norton’s “wealth of knowledge,” describing her as “supportive, encouraging and willing to show examples,” as well as “very good at listening & troubleshooting.”
This class brings together the vibrant colors of silk painting, the beautiful flow of calligraphic marks and lettering, the expressive power of the chosen text, and the richness of the silk fabric itself.
Experienced calligrapher, Laura Norton, will guide participants in the creation of richly-colored silk scarves and fabric pieces. After a brief introduction to (or review of) Italic calligraphy, we will explore issues relating to design and layout, the choice of colors, techniques for creating beautiful, flowing calligraphic marks and easy hand-lettering on silk, resist methods, and setting the paints in the fabric.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
The week will begin with introductions to Italic calligraphy, the silk painter’s tools, and the specific techniques used for making calligraphic marks and lettering on silk. Instruction time will provide demonstrations, examples, and easy-to-more-advanced technical information about silk painting and calligraphy, as well as brief explorations of color theory and design principles. Much of our class will be open work time with one-on-one feedback from the instructor as needed.
Participants wishing to create complex or ambitious projects should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.
Each participant will have the opportunity to create several scarves over the course of the week, using white and black silk. Experienced silk painters wishing to explore larger projects should contact the office for information about alternate materials.
What should I bring to class?
