Previous students describe Sarah Jane as “an incredibly gifted teacher,” who is “very open for questions, very encouraging, [and] helped me find my voice.”
Delve into the rich expressive possibilities of clay! From naturalistic to abstract, from whimsical to poignant, we will work together to explore and create sculptural forms that capture our inner visions and express our unique creative voices.
This class will cover a variety of techniques for sculpting in clay. We will explore form and composition, surface texture, and a range of finishing techniques to complete each sculpture. I will provide ongoing feedback throughout the process to help participants consider which techniques are best suited to their specific design.
All experience levels welcome. Ages 12+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Class time will feature demonstrations of specific sculpture techniques, as well as exercises to discover and develop project ideas, and independent work time with one-on-one feedback from the instructor.
Depending on the scale & complexity of the project, most participants will need to work outside of class in order to complete their projects.
Participants in this class will design and create one or more small- to mid- sized ceramic sculptures. Participants will have the option of finishing their pieces with a variety of techniques.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary tools and materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring photographs, sketches, or other sources for ideas, and to wear old clothes or an apron that can get dirty while working in the studio.
