Join returning faculty Sara Nordling for an exploration of color in drawing!
Wassily Kandinsky thought particular colors had spiritual connections. His work reflected that, even his objective paintings introduced expressive color. Fauvists, like Matisse also incorporated, or replaced local hues with expressive ones. In this class we will explore the expressive use of color. Using pastels and colored pencils we will draw the world around us, using color for its value and expressive qualities both to enhance, and to substitute for, local color.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
We will spend the class time drawing. Monday will start with black and white (charcoal) to begin the process and to think about values. We will then move into exercises that include using colors as values to totally replace local color and exercises where we use introduced color to enhance local color. The final two days of class will consist of creating 1 or 2 larger works of a more accomplished/final stage of drawing. We will start the first day in the classroom with a small still life and then, as the days and week progresses, spend more time outdoors drawing, weather permitting.
Participants wishing to create complex or ambitious projects should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.
