Ceramic serving ware and vessels can be found at the heart of many relational moments. It is present as chipped stoneware plates at a kitchen table or the fine china of a fancy restaurant, in the ubiquitous coffee cups of a 12-step meeting or the elegant chalice and paten of the Eucharist. Never the center of attention, this humble ware nonetheless holds space for a multitude of sacred moments.
This class will focus on designing and creating ceramics for our own most sacred and relational moments. Whether it’s a special mug for tea and morning quiet time, a set of bowls for family dinners, or the chalice and paten of the Lord’s supper, we will design wares that speak to our particular experiences and lives.
In addition to learning basic skills and techniques for working in clay, we will consider how issues of functionality, design, and embellishment can form and inform our ceramic creations.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
The week will begin with demonstrations of pinch, slab, and coil techniques, and some general information about form and design. Then we’ll jump into imagining, designing, and creating ceramics to bless our relationships with one another and with the Divine.
Most of class time will be dedicated to independent work time, with one-on-one feedback from the instructor as needed. Participants wishing to create elaborate pieces and/or sets of pieces should plan to work outside of class time.
What can I expect to create?
Each participant will create 2-5 ceramic pieces such as plates, bowls, cups, chalices, patens, or other functional wares. Ambitious participants or those with prior ceramic experience may create additional pieces.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary materials will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to wear old clothes for working in the studio. Photos or sketches for inspiration are also welcome!
