Image to Word and Word to Image

Laurie Rudel

Scott Burnett

In this class we will explore the use of sketchbooks as a tool to deepen our experience of scripture, poetry and prayer. With sketchbooks in hand we will make marks, rearrange words and play with color and texture in an effort to discover anew the word of God for us in this time.

All experience levels welcome. Ages 14+

What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?

Through guided meditation, creative responses, and reflective writing prompts gleaned from scripture and poetry we will begin a collective journey of wonder and discovery. While there will be time for group sharing, much of the focus of this class will be introspective.

There is no requirement for participants to work outside of class time; however, the studio is open 24 hours and participants are welcome to continue working in the afternoons and evenings if they choose.

What can I expect to create?

Over the course of the week we will fill our sketchbooks with explorations in a variety of image and text media — questions, observations, creative responses, and written reflections. Our creations may take the form of journaling, poetry, drawing, sketching, painting, and/or collage.

What should I bring to class?

All necessary materials will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring readings of scripture, poetry, or other prompts that may guide our times of reflection. Those with an established sketchbook or any preferred drawing or writing utensils are encouraged to bring these, as well. Please mark any personal art supplies clearly before the beginning of class!
