Join Guild Directors Jim and Vonda Drees as they join creative energies for the first time in the studio!
The inspiration for this class came about as remarks about Vonda’s images looking like stained glass danced with Jim’s passion and practice of creating stained glass.
Each morning will begin with a short talk from Jim on stained glass: basic principals of craft and design, meanings of symbols, historically significant stained glass work and contemporary pieces that tell dramatic stories.
Vonda will then facilitate the process of creating an image inspired by a story or concept you want to ponder and tell. Whose spiritual writing has been attracting your attention lately? Maybe it’s not writing; maybe it’s the book of creation revealed in the river, the garden, a favorite tree. What are the symbols, shapes, marks that you find yourself drawing these days? How might these connect on the page?
This is soul-pondering, connection-creating artistic conversation. Practically speaking, this type of work is great for enlarging into banners and for coloring pages, too.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
We’ll begin with pencil and a simple notebook as we work with prompts that inspire contemplation and creativity. Sketches will help determine the main layout of our compositions. We’ll share our questions and ideas with one another, perhaps revealing some new ways of looking at our work, then we’ll move on to the paper that will hold our final images.
First we’ll pencil in the design using a grid. Once the lines are set, we’ll go over them with black ink to create the black and white digital image. Finally we’ll add color using alcohol-based markers. There will be short, simple lessons on using the markers.
Participants will not be required to work outside of class; however, the studio will be open throughout the day and participants are welcome to continue working if they choose.
The goal is to create images that are both beautiful to the eye and deep in meaning. Each participant will create 2-3 images (9″x12″) that are visual expressions of some of their big questions in life, their observations and insights. Participants will also develop skills and methods to continue using this method of creativity as a practice for deep listening and personal formation after the conclusion of the class.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary materials will be provided. Smartphones work well in producing the digital images. Participants are welcome to bring favorite devotional material.
