We’re thrilled to welcome back Jillian Blackwell, whom previous students have described as “generous with her knowledge [with] endless patience for endless questions. There are not enough words to say how great she was as an instructor–meeting each student at their skill set and experience level.”
In this class, we will capture the ephemeral nature of the world, focusing on light and shadow. Light is the basis for visual art. It illuminates the world around us, creating and modulating color and defining form. Shadow is light’s fleeting counterpart. As artists, we are able to make records of the world and hold up small moments of beauty that we find. In this class, we will investigate many ways to record light and shadows through drawing, painting, and monoprinting techniques. All levels of ability are welcome in this class.
Classes will be offered Monday-Friday June 22-26, 2020 via Zoom from 9:45am-12:45pm (Pacific Time) for live discussion. Students may be instructed to work on their own for periods of that time, and then return to the group for discussion. Perhaps there will also be a shorter afternoon check in, if students are interested in that.
If desired, a version of the class could also be available as pre-recorded tutorials that students could access, and the instructor would then be available for emails and one-on-ones. In that way, the class could be taken by someone requiring flexible class timing.
What can I expect to create?
Visual art consisting of drawing, painting, and monoprinting techniques.
Jillian describes in detail what to expect here:
Here are the supplies. (Required items are what is needed. Recommended items would make it a premium supply list.)
Also recommended: Joint compound
Please note: All the items on the supply list are things that we will use, but you don’t necessarily need to get that particular item. For example, if you already have black and white acrylic paint, great! If you already have a few paint brushes, great! No need to purchase those things again.
*If you are ordering supplies online, please place your order as soon as you can. Shipping times for art supplies have expanded considerably.
Program Fee: Please discern what you can afford.
Sliding Scale: $275 – $175 – $75
While we recognize the importance of the practice of art, faith and community in our lives at all times, we are especially sensitive to offering opportunities now. You can decide your payment level.
$275 – If you have already registered for a summer program class, this is the amount you have paid as a deposit. Choosing this option means you do not owe anything else.
$275 – If you are newly registering, this is our Student and Supporter Fee.
$175 – Regular Program Fee
$75 – Reduced Fee/Partial Scholarship
