Online Journaling Course – Open the Door

Journaling can be practiced as a spiritual discipline and prayer, a way to process the Spirit’s stirring in our lives. Paying attention to moments, words, music can nudge us toward creating, so that we too can participate in the conversation. A journal is a way to mark this holy work.

Join Vonda Drees in this online course and explore imagination, attentiveness, and creative process, using a journal as a spiritual tool.

How does this work?

The group will gather in a secret Facebook group set up by Vonda a week before the session begins. There we will be allowed to share the images we create and learn from one another’s journeys, to the extent that each participant is comfortable. There will be short instructional videos shared by Vonda each week with tips and exercises to try. A reading schedule will keep us together.

Each week we will gather online through the video conferencing tool called Zoom. Each participant will receive an invitation link to join in. This link will also always be available as the top “pinned” post in the Facebook group, so simply clicking on that link will bring you into the meeting. Each Zoom conversation will be recorded and viewable from the Facebook group.

What will the instruction look like?

Short videos will be shared throughout the session in the Facebook group. This will allow you to watch them whenever it’s convenient for you, as well as however many times you’d like.

Through the sharing of our images in the Facebook group, there will be opportunity for encouragement within our creative community.

What will the online gathering look like?

The 40-minute online gathering will give us the opportunity to meet in real-time and talk about any insights, revelations, meaningful experiences from the journaling. This will also be a great time for questions and thoughts that are hard to put into words.

What can I expect to create?

Each participant will establish a personal journal filled with questions, observations, insights, and imagery. Participants will also develop skills and methods to continue using the journal as a practice for deep listening and personal formation after the conclusion of the class.

What will the reading schedule be for Open the Door?

Week 1 (Nov. 4 – 10) ~ The Door of Our Heart

Week 2 (Nov. 11 – 17) ~ Knocking on the Door

Week 3 (Nov. 18 – 24) ~ Opening the Door

Week 4 (Dec. 2 – 8) ~ Standing on the Threshold

Week 5 (Dec. 9 – 15) ~ Closing the Door

Week 6 (Dec. 16 – 22) ~ Beyond the Door

Note that the reading weeks will begin on Sundays. This will give us some material to talk about during the first online gathering.

Online Gatherings: Mondays, Nov. 5, 12, 19, Dec. 3, 10, 17; 8:00am-8:40am (Pacific Time) That means 11:00-11:40 Eastern, 10:00-10:40 Central, 9:00-9:40 Mountain. These conversations will be recorded and shared in the Facebook group. If you’re not able to make the online gatherings, you will have the option to watch them at a later time.

What will I need to purchase for this class?

Open the Door: A Journey to the True Self by Joyce Rupp, ~$10

Recommended Art Supplies and links:

Copic Sketch Markers and Ink Refills–R56, Y21, BG07, Y28

Copic 5×7 Sketchbook

Copic Multiliner Pens in sizes 1.0, 0.1 and Brush Medium.

The cost for these supplies will run about $60. Do consider buying the ink refills. Although the markers are a pricey first-time purchase, the ink refilling is a good economical practice. Plus, you will find that the ink refilling will have some creative lessons as well!
