Join Guild Co-Director Vonda Drees in her facilitation of a creative practice that has become such a meaningful experience during her time at the Guild.
The inspiration begins in nature and perhaps with a curiosity to see something that our eyes can not see well without magnification. An iPhone camera makes a great magnifier of the micro-landscape.
Vonda writes, “Since moving to the Grunewald Guild in 2016, I’ve created a library of photos in an Instagram called Grunewald_Graces. They’re micro-nature images and they tell the story of seasons and generations of plant life around the Guild. It was in the longing to spend more time with these images, that it seemed a logical next step to paint them. What I’ve learned so far in the painting of thirty or so 12″ x 12″ canvases is that an exact replica of what I see in the photo is not what I’m being called to in this work. Along with studying the photo with great attention comes something more offered by the paint strokes, an attention to the spirit of the painting.”
I sometimes think You are the reverse
of gravity, causing everything to rise,
from the heavy earth up to the highest skies,
but you show me that Yours is the work of
coming down, of weighting what is light
so that I, like You, might enter into what
is least and raise it up to sound love’s
delight in heaven’s proper height.
—Meister Eckhart’s Book of the Heart by Jon M. Sweeney and Mark Burrows, p. 32
Participants in this class can choose to use their own micro photos for inspiration. They can also choose an image from Grunewald_Graces. The recommended paint palette is limited, so we’ll have to keep that in mind.
Vonda will teach the simple process of creating a square micro photo with an iPhone and then gridding it. She will teach the method of oil painting that she practices: making a medium mix for thinning the oil paint, “drawing” the underpainting with that thinned paint, mixing pigments, and finally, the painting process.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
We will meet using Zoom. Vonda will use some pre-recorded videos to demonstrate technique, as well as demonstrate some of the work live. The videos will be password-protected on Vonda’s YouTube channel so you can watch them again, if that would be helpful.
We will have times when we are painting together while perhaps off camera in the Zoom Studio, remaining in the creative space. You can choose to work with music or in silence. Vonda will be available for questions that come up during this time. There will also be times when we come back together for the sharing of our process and next steps. All this will happen within the 9:45am-12:45 Pacific Time timeframe.
Ambitious projects may require time outside of class.
When is class time?
Monday-Friday June 29-July 3, 2020 via Zoom from 9:45am-12:45pm (Pacific Time)
What can I expect to create?
One or two 12″x 12″ painted canvases of a micro subject
What supplies do I need for class?
- absorbent paper towels (for wiping your brush)
- small lidded container (baby food jar size or smaller) to hold your medium mix in
- glass palette (this can simply be glass from a picture frame) or palette paper
- palette knife or window scraper if using a glass palette
If you have oil paint on hand, you are welcome to use that. If you would like to choose alternative colors, that’s okay, too; just be mindful of how well your color choices will work together. If you would like to participate in this class and want to make do with acrylic paint, you will have different results, but you can do that, too.
