Join Guild Faculty Chuck Kirchner and open the door to the creative muse through the practice of photography.
Chuck writes, “As a creative being and artist, we often take our art for granted and either go through the motions or put it off until ‘inspired.’ Well, oftentimes, the muse – our inspiration, our enthusiasm, our guide – is talking to us but we’re not listening. Life interferes, Netflix beckons, and the camera or paint brush are kept waiting. If one is to move beyond the art status-quo, the muse needs be felt and listened to, unbinding the constraints and freeing the creative juices to flow again.”
Through a series of readings, creative exercises, and creative photo techniques, you will let the muse lead you to a new level of creativity, reengaging and enhancing your vision. With camera in hand, you’ll explore the landscapes of Grunewald and the eastern Cascades with newfound enthusiasm and vision. Friendly and positive critiques, individual and group discussions, several field trips, labyrinth walks, and time for personal rest and reflection will make for an inspirational week.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 18+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Generally, the mornings will be spent reviewing photographs and discussing creativity and specific photo techniques. Field activities (before or after breakfast) will also take place several mornings to take advantage of morning light. Afternoons will generally free for photography, post-processing, relaxing (the Guild campus is a perfect place for this!), or Guild group activities. On the last evening of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to share their work with other participants attending workshops that week (optional).
Chuck will generally be available afternoons and evenings for one-on-one or small groups discussions, field demonstrations, etc. He writes, “And of course I’ll be joining everyone at meal times!”
Digital photographs for sharing within the class as well as for sharing via social media or printed copies depending on individual participant interests. Quantity will depend on the individual participant, ranging from a host of images to one or two iconic photographs. We’ll see how the muse inspires!
What should I bring to class?
All participants are encouraged to bring examples of their work (8-10 prints or digital files on a thumb drive that’s PC-compatible).
- Camera and lens(es) (digital-preferred). A digital SLR with program and manual settings is ideal, though we can work with whatever camera and lens combination you have.
- Camera manual
- Spare camera battery and charger
- Lens cleaning cloth
- Clothing appropriate for outdoor activities, including modest hiking.
- Laptop computer for downloading, storing, and initial editing of photographs
Bringing a laptop will allow critiquing of photos during the workshop and will enable participants to gain more from the workshop. Chuck generally uses Adobe Lightroom for post-processing, though Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Apple Photo, or similar programs are fine as well. Adobe software can usually be downloaded for a free thirty-day trial.
