We’re thrilled to welcome back Jillian Blackwell, whom previous students have described as “generous with her knowledge [with] endless patience for endless questions. She shared her love of ceramics with everything she says and does. There are not enough words to say how great she was as an instructor–meeting each student at their skill set and experience level.”
In this class, we will learn various hand-building techniques to create our own coffee or tea mugs. We will delve into slab-building, coil construction, and pinching techniques. In between ceramic processes we will do poetry writing exercises. We will explore rhythm and rhyme and free form poetry. At the end of the week, we will hold a coffee house open mic, where each student can bring in a poem to perform and their own handmade cup from which to sip coffee or tea.
This would be an excellent introduction to clay for beginners and young teens, but the rich array of techniques will also benefit experienced ceramic artists.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Each class day will begin with a check-in followed by a brief demonstration of a new technique. The rest of the class will be open work time with one-on-one feedback from the instructor as needed. It is not necessary to work outside of class, but the studio is open 24 hours a day and participants are welcome to continue working as much as they choose.
What can I expect to create?
Each participant will design and create a set of handmade mugs. The total number of mugs will vary depending on each person’s experience level and desire to work outside of class; most people can expect to finish at least 3-4 mugs in the course of the week.
What should I bring to class?
All necessary materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear old clothes or an apron that can get dirty while working in the studio.
