A previous student describes Guild Master Jean Tudor and her class like this, “Jean is a funny, sensitive, skilled artist, leader + teacher. Totally positive experience.” Another participant said, “Jean has been an excellent, patient teacher for this beginning student.”
In this enameling class you’ll get to join Jean in a week of experimentation with the Japanese pottery method of firing as applied to enamels, the process of fusing glass to metal. Discover which enamels to apply to achieve the most iridescence. Practice methods of controlling design and learn the effects of silver nitrate in the process, materials used in the raku firing, and the use of raku plates in our finished work.
Jean writes, “It’s dirty work, but someone has to do it. And it’s fun, so why not us!”
Enjoy the delight of taking your work out of the kiln and finding it has changed from grainy, muted colors to a beautiful, iridescent and smooth work of art — pure magic!
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 15+
This class will meet daily from 9:45am-12:45pm, with some additional studio time available for those who wish to continue working outside of class. Each day will focus on a specific enameling technique. Many students choose to continue working outside of class; however, this is not required.
What can I expect to create?
Participants can expect to create 6-8 small pieces using basic enameling techniques, with the addition of the raku process involving reduction firing, soggy newspaper, pine needles, and dried leaves.
What should I bring to class?
All enameling supplies will be provided. Please bring a sketchbook or several sheets of drawing paper, and something to write with.
