Explore alternative firing methods with Scottie Sinclair, an instructor whom past students describe as “an excellent instructor, readily available to help, patient, full of stories and experiences to share.”
Saggar fired clay simulates the oldest way of finish ceramic work; pit firing. While pit firing can yield beautiful results, the firing process itself can damage fragile forms and the surface finish is quite unpredictable. Saggar firing takes the best parts of pit firing, beautiful organic blushes of color, ghost images of organic material and the vessels in close proximity, and gives us just a little more control while embracing the unpredictability of the finishing method. In this workshop we will be hand building objects and vessels with coil, slab and pinch methods and burnishing all objects to be fired. All items made in this class will be non functional and wildly individual.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 16+
Class will be a mixture of demonstrations and student guided instruction. The final firings will take place on Friday throughout the day.
All participants in this class MUST spend significant time outside of class in order to complete their projects.
Please expect to make between 3-5 vessels or sculptures along with a few smaller test pieces.
What should I bring to class?
All ceramic supplies will be provided. Please bring studio clothes, music and a sense of adventure!
