We’re happy to welcome back faculty member John Thompson for this perennially favorite class!
John says: We will carve in wood (mostly basswood — the same wood used to build the Missoula Carousel). Participants will also have the opportunity to carve soapstone and limestone.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
Please note that this class is physically demanding, and participants can expect tired hands at the end of the day.
Class will begin with a safety talk and some tool demonstrations. Mostly we will have work time, with some discussions about different sculptors, carving styles, and techniques. John usually provides a lot of one-on-one time to help individuals with their projects. The studio is often dusty and noisy – but also a lot of fun.
What can I expect to create?
All participants should be able to finish a simple relief wood carving or a simple carving in the round. They should be able to try some stone carving and some have finished a soapstone carving in the past. I try to explain to my students they will most likely not be able to finish a sculpture like “The David” by Michelangelo, but they will get the experience of using the tools and a feel for what a sculptor does.
What should I bring to class?
A sense of humor! Experienced carvers may bring their own tools (clearly marked, please!) and wood, but this is not required. Ideas and sketchbooks are always good, too.
