We’re trying something new this year and offering a 4-day songwriting workshop within the rhythm of Spring Sacred Arts 2020 with Jan Krist. Past students speak highly of Jan’s ability to create a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for new music to emerge. A student last summer wrote, “Jan is an excellent teacher, offering believable encouragement and gentle, helpful feedback.”
Music is being used to sooth and heal. It is being used to lower blood pressure and relieve pain. We’ll take a closer look at the healing power of music and of writing music. You’ll be given a prompt and a lot of soul soothing music to listen to. And then — “Healer, heal thyself.” Laughter included.
This songwriting workshop is the coming together of generous and supportive instructors and students, in support of the creative journey we are on collectively and individually. This 4-day workshop will culminate on Saturday morning at the sending celebration. At that time, songwriters will share their songs alongside the other participants’ creative offerings.
This workshop is designed for more highly skilled students, ones who already know the basics of songwriting. We will discuss the importance of learning to cover the songs of others as a way to improve our understanding of songs, exploring construction, chords, and rhythms as we gain skill, and develop our own creative voices. Ages 16+.
This workshop will begin with writing exercises designed to kickstart the writing process. Our time together will begin with instruction, conversation, and opportunities to work on the song assignment or prompt handed out on the first day. Later in the workshop, we will shift our focus to the art of the re-write as we analyze our work in a supportive and affirming atmosphere. While there will be time in class to work, most of the writing will be done outside of class.
Participants wishing to create complex or ambitious projects should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.
Students can expect to write, arrange and perform at least one new song.
What should I bring to class?
Please bring a notebook, as well as any musical instruments you may wish to incorporate in your songwriting. A piano is available for use in the Centrum.
