Spring Songwriting Workshop with Jan Krist

We’re thrilled to offer this long weekend songwriting workshop with one of the Guild’s best-loved instructors! Past students rave about Jan Krist‘s ability to create a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for new music to emerge.

The Grunewald Guild songwriting workshop is the coming together of generous and supportive instructors and students, in support of the creative journey we are on collectively and individually. This weekend workshop will culminate with a Sunday-morning coffee house performance of songs created in the class.

This workshop is designed for more highly skilled students, ones who already know the basics of songwriting. We will discuss the importance of learning to cover the songs of others as a way to improve our understanding of songs, exploring construction, chords, and rhythms as we gain skill, and develop our own creative voices. Ages 16+

What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?

This workshop will begin with writing exercises designed to kickstart the writing process. Our time together will begin with instruction, conversation, and opportunities to work on the song assignment or prompt handed out on the first day. Later in the workshop, we will shift our focus to the art of the re-write as we analyze our work in a supportive and affirming atmosphere. While there will be time in class to work, most of the writing will be done outside of class.

What can I expect to create?

Students can expect to write, arrange and perform at least one new song.

What should I bring to class?

Please bring a notebook and writing utensil, as well as any musical instruments you may wish to incorporate in your songwriting. A piano is available for use in the Centrum building.

This workshop grew out of the energy and community of the Guild’s week-long summer songwriting class — and students are encouraged to consider signing up for both.
