If you’ve been at the Guild over the past couple years, you have likely met Guest Care Coordinator Courtney Rutzer. Join Courtney as she takes on the additional role of faculty this summer!
In this mixed media class, participants will learn and utilize the elements and principles of design to influence their own unique creations in paint and threads, with a focus on shape, line and color. Expect to learn simple techniques and tips for handling acrylic paint and embroidery floss on raw canvas. Depending on student desire, more or less instruction will be given. Loose prompts will be given on a daily basis to encourage group discussion and personal reflection, with the intention of stirring wonder for each student to create from. Intentional, communal and personal reflection, color, threads and paint will guide us in uncovering and shaping the beautiful but daunting place of “here”.
All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 14+
What will class time be like? Will I need to work outside of class?
Each class session will start with a daily reflection-prompt drawn from a poem, podcast or song followed by a teaching for the day. Expect dialogue on the daily prompt and space to creatively explore ideas with the class. Students should expect ample time to work on their acrylic and thread creations in class, with intentional silent work periods. Though, working outside of class is highly encouraged.
Students can expect to create a few painted and embroidered pieces, ranging between 2” x 2” and 12″ x 16″. Bigger and more ambitious projects will require students to work outside of class. Over the course of the week, students are given the freedom to create a series of small pieces, or to develop one to two large pieces. At the end of the week, students will be instructed on how to mount their piece on a wooden dowel, ready to hang on a wall.
All necessary materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring journal for person reflection and a sketch book.
Those with an established sketchbook or any preferred drawing or writing utensils are welcome to bring them. Please mark any personal art supplies clearly before the beginning of class.
